How to Set Up a Closed Testing Track in Google Play Console

Creating Your First Closed Test

Before you can invite 12 testers to try your app, you must configure a closed testing track in the Google Play Console. This is where your app bundle (AAB) lives during the 14-day testing phase.

Follow these steps to initialize your track:

1. Log into your Google Play Console.
2. Select your app from the dashboard.
3. On the left-hand menu, under Testing, click on Closed testing.
4. Click Create track in the top right corner. Give it a name (e.g., "Alpha 14-Day Test").

Uploading Your App Bundle

Once the track is created, click Manage track and navigate to the Releases tab to create a new release.

• Upload your Android App Bundle (.aab).
• Add simple release notes so testers know what to look for.
• Click Save and proceed to the review screen.

The "In Review" Phase

You cannot start your 14-day test immediately after clicking submit. Google must perform an initial automated (and sometimes manual) review of your app to ensure it doesn't violate basic safety policies.

Store Listing Requirements

If the "Send for review" button is grayed out, it means you haven't completed the mandatory app setup steps. Ensure your Data Safety form, Content Rating, and Main Store Listing (icon, screenshots) are complete.

Wait Time

This initial review usually takes between 1 to 7 days. Once the status changes from "In review" to "Available," your opt-in link will become active.

Once your track is approved, you can safely copy the web opt-in link and send it to your testers to begin the 14-day countdown.
