How to Pause and Resume Closed Testing Safely

TL;DR

You can pause a closed test in the Play Console, but doing so will instantly break your 14-day continuous testing streak. When you resume the track, the clock restarts at Day 1. Instead of pausing, it is heavily recommended to simply push a hotfix update to the active track.

The Danger of the "Pause Track" Button

Inside the Google Play Console's Closed Testing dashboard, there is an option to "Pause track." Developers often click this when a critical bug is discovered, thinking they can halt the test, fix the code, and resume exactly where they left off.

Do not click this button if you care about your 14-day streak.

Google’s policy requires 14 continuous days of testing. If you pause the track, you break the continuity. The moment you click resume, your countdown will restart at Day 1, wasting all previous testing days.

What to Do Instead: The Hotfix Strategy

If your testers discover a severe bug that prevents them from using the app on Day 5, do not pause the test. Instead, execute a hotfix:

  1. Keep the track active.
  2. Immediately fix the bug in your code and generate a new Android App Bundle (e.g., moving from v1.0.0 to v1.0.1).
  3. Create a new release within the same Closed Testing track and upload the new bundle.
  4. Roll out the release to 100%.

Why the Hotfix Strategy Works

Pushing an update does not break your 14-day streak. In fact, it does the exact opposite: it strengthens your testing profile.

When Google reviews your final production application, seeing that you discovered a bug, actively pushed an update during the 14 days, and that testers downloaded the update, perfectly mimics a professional QA cycle.

When Should You Actually Pause?

You should only pause a closed testing track if the app is fundamentally broken beyond repair, requires a massive architectural rewrite that will take weeks, or if you accidentally uploaded a build containing severe privacy violations/malware. In all other scenarios, keep the track live and push updates.
