Why Email Lists Are Better Than Google Groups

When setting up your closed testers, Google Play gives you two primary options: use a Google Group or use an Email List. While Google Groups seem convenient, they often result in "Item Not Found" errors due to strict permission settings.

Using an Email List is foolproof. You explicitly whitelist exact Google accounts, ensuring immediate access without the user having to join a secondary group first.

Step-by-Step: Adding Your Tester List

1. Go to your Play Console and select your app.
2. Navigate to Testing > Closed testing and click Manage track.
3. Switch to the Testers tab.
4. Scroll down to the "Email lists" section and click Create email list.

Inputting the Data

You can name the list whatever you want (e.g., "14-Day QA Team"). You have two methods to input the addresses:

Manual Entry

Paste your tester emails directly into the text box, separated by commas. This is ideal if you are only adding the minimum 12 to 20 users.

CSV Upload

If you purchase a testing package and receive a CSV file, simply click "Upload CSV". Ensure the file contains only email addresses separated by line breaks or commas without complex headers.

Finalizing the Setup

After saving the email list, make sure you actually check the box next to the newly created list in the "Testers" tab, and then click Save Changes at the bottom right of the screen.

Once saved, the testers on that list are officially authorized to access your app via the web opt-in link.
